Anglo American used its investor day to press the case for its simplified portfolio, with copper taking a larger share of the production mix as the group continues to exit or demerge the businesses that have historically diluted its returns, Proactive Investors reported.
The investor day format matters because Anglo’s equity story is now a sequencing argument: which assets go, in what order, and at what point the remaining copper weighted portfolio commands the multiple the market pays for pure plays. Management’s task this week was to convince holders that the disposals are a programme with dates attached rather than an aspiration.
The group’s copper exposure also explains its resilience in a falling sector this week: with Escondida’s strike averted and Antofagasta growing output, Chilean copper is the part of the mining complex where the volume story is intact.
