Three children and an adult killed in Oregon school shooting

Four people were killed at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon: three children and one adult, according to CBS News and CNN, both citing law enforcement sources, in reporting carried by AFP. The suspected shooter was also shot and killed inside the school.

Bend police said officers responded just before 1 p.m. local time after a first call reported that a person had fired into a car, and that within minutes further callers reported a person had entered the school and started shooting. Moments after officers arrived, police learned the suspected shooter had been shot and killed inside the school; officials said it was still unclear whether he was shot by someone at the school or by a police officer, and a police spokesperson told CNN it may have been a bystander.

At least two people were taken to a hospital, and police said children were among the hurt without confirming whether they were the people hospitalised. The school was locked down and cleared room by room, and families were directed to a reunification site at Journey Church in Bend. Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said the district was “stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy,” and FBI Director Kash Patel said FBI Portland agents were on the scene assisting local police.

Investigators have not released the shooter’s name or a motive, and no information about the weapon has been made public.
