Global Ship Lease has secured a 1 billion dollar loan to finance 15 new containerships, the company announced, one of the largest single fleet financings by a mid sized tonnage provider this year.
The deal is a bet on the charter market’s duration. Owners order and finance newbuildings when they believe charterers will keep paying for modern, fuel efficient capacity through the delivery window, and lenders underwrite the same view when they fund 15 hulls against it. The financing lands in a week when the physical market sent the opposite signal, dry bulk freight down 4.12 percent in the site tables, a reminder that container and bulk are living in different cycles.
For equity holders the structure matters as much as the size: a billion dollars of debt against contracted or contractable newbuildings converts the company from an owner of ageing tonnage into a growth vehicle, with the leverage that implies in both directions.
