Missiles struck the Maashiq presidential palace in Aden on Thursday while Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council was in session, killing two presidential guards and wounding three, the government said.

Why it matters: A successful strike on the seat of Yemen's internationally recognized government, during a council session tied to the chairman's arrival in Aden, extends the week's air war from Saudi targets into the Yemeni government's own compound.

Missiles struck the Maashiq presidential palace in Aden on Thursday while the Presidential Leadership Council was holding a session inside, according to a Yemeni government statement carried by the state news agency Saba and reported by the TT and dpa wire services. The government said two presidential guards were killed and three wounded, that the attack did not disrupt the council’s work, and that council chairman Rashad al-Alimi and the other participants were not in immediate danger.

Al-Alimi had recently arrived in the southern port city and was due to deliver a speech at a University of Aden graduation ceremony. The government accused the Houthis of carrying out the attack and of targeting the state and its institutions, and Russian state media separately reported that the Houthis had fired five missiles at the presidential palace in Aden.
