IEA board agrees to accelerate remaining emergency stock release

Commodities Thursday, October 15, 2026 · Updated Oct 15, 2026 10:13

The IEA Governing Board, meeting on Thursday, agreed to complete and accelerate the roughly 100 million barrels still to come under the March 2026 collective action, with over 20 million barrels of diesel to be released as soon as possible.

Why it matters: About 330 million barrels have already been released in response to the Hormuz crisis and the board said the final total will exceed the original 400 million, but the statement sets no new volume or deadline, so the diesel squeeze the agency flagged this week gets faster delivery rather than fresh supply.

The International Energy Agency’s Governing Board said on Thursday that member governments will take all necessary steps to complete the remaining releases under the March 2026 collective action in a timely manner and to accelerate them, with specific plans already in place. About 330 million barrels have been released so far against the original 400 million barrel action agreed in response to the Strait of Hormuz crisis, and the board said the total will exceed that figure because some members have already released more than they pledged and others intend to. Of the remaining accelerated volumes, over 20 million barrels are diesel, to be released as soon as possible, and members with production and refining capacity were encouraged to boost supply of crude and refined products, particularly diesel, while the secretariat keeps monitoring completion and reports back to G7 leaders.
