Second explosion in six days injures two at Motor Oil

An explosion during maintenance work at Motor Oil's refinery at Agioi Theodoroi, near Corinth, has injured two contractor workers, ERT News reported on Thursday, the second explosion at the site in six days.

Why it matters: The first explosion, on October 9, left two contractor workers dead and led to four arrests; a second blast during maintenance at the same refinery raises the chance of a regulatory shutdown order at a plant that supplies a large share of Greek fuel.

An explosion at Motor Oil’s refinery at Agioi Theodoroi in Corinthia injured two contractor workers on Thursday, ERT News reported. The blast occurred in Unit 750 while maintenance work was under way on a high pressure heat exchanger. Both men were taken to Corinth Hospital with multiple serious injuries, one with burns and the other with fractures, and doctors were assessing whether they needed intubation and transfer to a hospital in Attica. ERT gave no cause for the explosion and quoted no company or official source, and its report said nothing about a shutdown or damage to the wider plant. The explosion is the second at the site in six days: on Friday, October 9, two contractor workers were seriously injured in an earlier blast at the same refinery and later died in an Athens hospital, and four arrests were made in connection with that incident, ERT said.
