Octopus Energy Generation has committed 250 million euros to biomethane production, the company said, targeting 3 terawatt hours of annual output by 2030 from a portfolio of anaerobic digestion plants and upgrades across European markets.
Biomethane is the gas grid’s decarbonisation argument in physical form: the same molecule, produced from manure, food waste and residues, injected into existing networks and sold to the industrial users who cannot electrify. The economics ride on gate fees, guarantees of origin and the EU’s biomethane targets, which give the fuel a policy floor few renewable segments enjoy.
For Octopus the commitment extends a generation portfolio built on wind and solar into the molecule business, a hedge its retail arm can sell as green gas to the customers electrification cannot yet reach.
