OrbiMed has raised 3 billion dollars in commitments for two new private equity funds, more than 1.9 billion dollars for US and European life sciences venture investing and over 1 billion dollars for Asian healthcare.

Why it matters: A 3 billion dollar raise by one of the sector's largest specialist investors, with a dedicated billion plus Asia vehicle, underlines how much institutional capital is still chasing biotech despite a difficult funding backdrop for smaller companies.

OrbiMed said on Thursday it has raised 3 billion dollars in commitments across two new private equity funds: OrbiMed Private Investments X, which raised over 1.9 billion dollars for US and European life sciences venture opportunities, and OrbiMed Asia Partners VI, which raised over 1 billion dollars for healthcare growth equity and venture capital across Asia. Both funds will back companies in biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics and technology enabled healthcare services, with investors including medical institutions, endowments, pension funds and sovereign wealth funds. Managing partner Carl Gordon pointed to AI, new therapeutic modalities and China’s emergence as a biotechnology power as expanding the opportunity set the funds will pursue.
