Saudi coalition says cruise missile destroyed over Madinah

Politics Thursday, October 15, 2026 · Updated Oct 15, 2026 08:04

The Saudi led coalition said on Thursday that its air defences intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile over the Madinah region in western Saudi Arabia, the latest interception in a week of Houthi attacks on the kingdom.

Why it matters: Each new interception widens the map of the air war over Saudi Arabia, which has already closed Riyadh's airport until at least October 17 and forced the postponement of the EU-GCC summit.

Data as of Coalition statement, October 15, 2026, as reported by Gulf Business and Interfax (in Russian). The claim is the coalition's own; it did not identify the missile's origin or target, and no independent confirmation was available, hence grade C.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki confirmed the interception in a statement carried by Saudi state media, without identifying the missile’s origin or intended target and with no word on casualties or damage. The statement follows a week in which Houthi missiles and drones have struck Riyadh’s airport and an Aramco building in Dhahran, and a coalition drone interception over the Eastern Province earlier on Thursday. Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport remains closed until at least October 17, with more than 3,100 Saudi departures cancelled or not operating over the past week, according to Cirium data reported by Gulf Business.
