Applied Digital’s latest quarter came with a net loss of 187.5 million dollars, and the stock paid for it immediately, falling by about a quarter in extended trading. The loss reflects the carrying cost of building very large data centre campuses ahead of their lease revenue, financed with debt and preferred capital at prices that have risen with every turn of the AI credit debate.
The company’s model is the buildout in concentrated form: secure power and land, sign a long term lease with a hyperscaler or AI cloud, finance construction against the lease, repeat. When the tenant side of the market is being repriced, as CoreWeave’s bonds were this week, the developer’s equity is where the volatility concentrates.
Set against TSMC’s guidance raise today, the picture is a supply chain whose demand signal is unambiguous and whose financial structure is the argument. The chips are selling; the question the equity market is asking Applied Digital is who funds the buildings, and at what price.
