What matters today

  1. Infrastructure

Fairfax to buy IDBI Bank stake for about 5.6 billion dollars

India's government will sell its stake in IDBI Bank to Canada's Fairfax Financial in a deal valued at about 5.6 billion dollars, and IDBI shares fell 7 percent on the announcement as investors weighed the price.

Why it matters: IDBI is the largest Indian bank privatisation of this cycle; a Canadian insurer taking control marks foreign strategic capital, not a domestic conglomerate, as the buyer of India's state bank selloff, and it resets the template for the remaining state bank stakes.

  2. Commodities

Gold tops 4,200 dollars as haven bid returns

Gold settled at 4,203.70 dollars an ounce, up 0.81 percent, and silver rose 2.04 percent to 57.99 dollars, as the precious metals complex took the bid on a day when oil fell and freight rates slid.

Why it matters: Above 4,200 dollars, gold is no longer trading the war headline by headline; it is trading the stock of distrust in paper assets, and silver's outperformance says the bid has a speculative as well as a defensive leg.

  3. Politics

OFAC designates Iran charity and shadow banking networks

The US Treasury's OFAC published a fresh round of Iran related designations on October 15, alongside a Cuba designation and new and amended general licences, under two releases branding the campaign Operation Economic Outcast.

Why it matters: The designations target the financial plumbing, charities used as fronts and shadow banking networks, rather than oil cargoes, which is where sanctions pressure compounds: every designated node raises compliance costs for the whole network.

  4. Technology

TSMC raises 2026 revenue guidance toward 40 percent growth

TSMC has raised its full year 2026 revenue guidance to growth of close to 40 percent in US dollar terms and guided fourth quarter revenue to between 42.1 billion and 43.7 billion dollars, a day after posting record third quarter profit.

Why it matters: The guidance raise is the AI buildout's most important single data point this earnings season: the world's largest contract chipmaker, with visibility no one else has, is saying demand is still accelerating into 2027.

  5. Life Sciences

City Therapeutics prices upsized 230 million dollar IPO

City Therapeutics priced an upsized initial public offering of 10,952,381 shares at 21 dollars each, raising about 230 million dollars gross, and starts trading on Nasdaq today under the ticker CTY.

Why it matters: An upsized pricing is the biotech IPO market's clearest health signal this autumn: investors paid up for an RNAi platform story, and the deal gives the sector a pricing reference for the queue behind it.

  6. Mining

PLS approves A$1.9bn Pilgangoora expansion to 2Mtpa

PLS Group has given final investment approval to the A$1.9 billion P2000 expansion at Pilgangoora in Western Australia, lifting plant capacity to 2.0 million tonnes a year with first output due in 2029.

Why it matters: It is the largest single lithium capacity commitment made since the price downturn, and it is justified on unit cost, with ore sorting expected to cut costs by about $210 a tonne at full rate, rather than on a price recovery.

  7. Commodities

Hormuz ship attacks hit new high despite US claim

Attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz have reached a new high, with 149 confirmed incidents since March 1, even as the United States says it and its partners control the strait.

Why it matters: A strait carrying a fraction of normal traffic at severe threat levels is the physical fact behind oil, LNG and freight pricing, whatever the military language around it.

  8. Rates

Euro area inflation confirmed at 3.8 percent in September final

Euro area annual inflation was confirmed at 3.8 percent in September, up from 3.2 percent in August, Eurostat said on Friday, with energy prices up 18.9 percent on the year contributing 1.71 percentage points of the total.

Why it matters: The final print matches the flash estimate exactly, so there is no relief for the European Central Bank: the September jump is an energy story on top of a services rate still running at 3.2 percent, and it hardens the case for policy to stay restrictive into the winter.

  9. Mining

Alcoa lifts profit and cash flow in third quarter

Alcoa reported third quarter net income of 483 million dollars and free cash flow of 472 million dollars on revenue of 3.7 billion dollars, as its AliGroup acquisition from South32 cleared a shareholder vote.

Why it matters: Alcoa is converting a strong aluminium market into the balance sheet for the largest deal in its recent history, and the quarter shows production rising for a sixth straight quarter while the acquisition financing is already in place.

Overnight markets · Friday, October 16, 2026 · Updated 7:13 AM

Why markets moved overnight

Tanker freight fell 9 percent while gold miners jumped 4.34 percent, a split tape of softening physical trade and a hardening haven bid.

Tanker freight fell 9.0 percent, the largest move in the tables. This morning’s reporting offers no clear single driver for the index fall, and it cuts against the spot market reporting in today’s oil shipping story, where fixture and insurance costs on the riskiest routes are spiking; the split is itself the story of a freight market fragmenting by route and risk (see today’s oil shipping costs story).

Gold miners rose 4.34 percent and silver miners rose 3.48 percent, the equity confirmation of the precious metals bid in today’s commodities edition. Gold settled above 4,200 dollars an ounce on the haven trade, and Hecla’s record silver quarter, in today’s mining edition, gave the silver names a company level reason to run.

Dry bulk freight fell 2.62 percent, down 15.4 percent on the week. No clear single driver appears in this morning’s reporting; the move extends a week long slide in bulk rates that sits oddly against the week’s mining financing decisions, which were all made on long term cost curves rather than spot freight.

WTI crude fell 1.99 percent to 96.02 dollars a barrel. Today’s reporting explains the direction: supply workarounds keep arriving, with Aramco offering extra spot cargoes to Europe in this morning’s watcher story and India cutting its diesel export tax, while demand destruction caps every war premium rally (see today’s Aramco and India diesel stories).

The US 10 year Treasury yield fell 10.1 basis points to 5.09 percent, and the 5 year fell 9.3 basis points to 4.90 percent. The long end led rally is covered in today’s rates edition: duration buyers treated post inflation levels as value, helped by Eurostat confirming euro area inflation at 3.8 percent with core easing to 2.4 percent, and by the Federal Reserve chair’s closing remarks in Bangkok.

Silver rose 1.91 percent to 57.92 dollars an ounce, extending the precious complex’s run even after a soft week, with the producers’ results in today’s mining edition supplying the fundamental echo.

The cross market read is a barbell. At one end, the haven and duration trades are bid together, gold up, miners up more, Treasury yields down 10 basis points, the dollar softer. At the other, the physical economy’s prices are easing, oil down, freight down hard, bulk down for a fifth straight week on the weekly measure. Markets are pricing safety as scarce and stuff as plentiful, and this morning’s reporting, from TSMC’s guidance raise to the Pilgangoora expansion, says the real economy is still spending through the split.
