EMA backs Lilly oral GLP-1 Foundayo for EU approval

The European Medicines Agency's CHMP has recommended granting a marketing authorisation for Foundayo (orforglipron), a once daily oral GLP-1 tablet for weight management and type 2 diabetes in adults.

Why it matters: An oral GLP-1 already selling in the United States would gain an EU route to market, giving European patients a tablet alternative to injectable weight and diabetes medicines once the European Commission decides.

The European Medicines Agency’s human medicines committee recommended granting a marketing authorisation for Foundayo (orforglipron) at its October 12 to 15 meeting, the agency said. Foundayo is an oral GLP-1 receptor agonist for weight management and treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults, taken as a tablet once daily.

The recommendation was one of six new medicine approvals backed by the committee at the meeting, alongside five extensions of indication for existing medicines. The opinion now goes to the European Commission, which issues the final EU wide authorisation decision.
