Ethiopia has installed a six-month interim government in Tigray after its forces retook the region, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed pledging free elections once the administration's term ends.
Why it matters: The interim administration is Addis Ababa's bid to consolidate control after the TPLF's failed insurrection, and whether the election pledge holds will decide if the region returns to a political settlement or renewed conflict.
Data as of Al Jazeera reporting published 13:54 UTC on 2026-10-16, opened and read in full, corroborated by Arab News reporting the same announcement. The TPLF had not responded at the time of the reports.
Ethiopia has announced that a six-month interim government will take control of Tigray, after federal forces retook the northern region following an insurrection launched last month by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said five officials, including the mayor of the capital Mekelle, will run the state under directives from the federal government, and pledged that free elections will follow.
The TPLF, whose fighters surrendered in Mekelle in early October, has yet to respond to the announcement.
