Greece is preparing legislation that would oblige data centers to source 60 percent of their electricity from renewable generation, Datacenter Dynamics reported. The draft would make Greece one of the strictest jurisdictions in Europe on data centre power sourcing, at a moment when the country is marketing itself to hyperscalers on its solar resource, subsea cable landings and position between Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The policy tension is European wide. Governments want the investment and the digital sovereignty that come with data centers, and they want the power systems those facilities strain to stay on a decarbonisation path. Mandates like the Greek draft convert the second goal into a condition of the first, effectively requiring operators to bring their own green generation or long term power purchase agreements with them.
Whether 60 percent survives consultation is the open question, and this item is single sourced to trade reporting of a draft, graded C accordingly. The direction, however, matches decisions elsewhere in Europe this week, including British planning and growth zone rulings in today’s roundup.
