Malaysian government bond issuance reached RM155 billion for 2026 to date, with RM10 billion issued in October and RM1.359 trillion outstanding, Bank Negara data show, as third quarter GDP growth slowed to 5.3 percent.
Why it matters: Malaysia is the region's deepest local currency bond market relative to its economy; steady issuance absorption alongside 5 percent plus growth is the ASEAN funding model working as designed.
Data as of BNM Financial Markets Infrastructure Platform issuance summary (2026 year to date, October issuance RM10,000 million, outstanding RM1,358,897 million). Q3 GDP reported October 16, 2026.
Malaysia has issued RM155 billion of government bonds and sukuk in 2026 to date, Bank Negara Malaysia’s market platform data show, including RM10 billion in October, taking the outstanding stock to RM1.359 trillion. The programme has run at a steady RM15 billion to RM20 billion a month with no failed tenders.
Growth is cooperating. Third quarter GDP rose 5.3 percent year on year, slowing from the second quarter but keeping Malaysia at the top of the ASEAN growth table, and Bank Negara’s governor struck an upbeat tone on the economy in interviews this week.
The combination, deep domestic demand for duration from the pension and insurance base, a managed issuance calendar, and 5 percent growth, is why Malaysian yields have stayed range bound while other emerging markets have repriced on the US inflation shock. The next test is the federal budget’s borrowing requirement for 2027.
