Elon Musk has become the defining financier of the Republican midterm effort. The Senate Leadership Fund, the party’s top Senate super PAC, reported its biggest ever quarterly fundraising total, 273 million dollars, in a Federal Election Commission filing, and entered the final weeks before the November 3 midterms with more than 155 million dollars in cash.
The engine of the record is a single cheque. Musk gave 158 million dollars to the fund, described by CNBC as among the largest known political donations by an individual in US history. Across Republican groups, his giving since July totals more than 276 million dollars, including 76 million dollars to his own America PAC, which runs a large canvassing operation, 20 million dollars to the Congressional Leadership Fund for House races, and 10 million dollars to the Lone Star Liberty PAC backing Texas Senate nominee Ken Paxton. His disclosed giving across the full 2025 to 2026 cycle is about 366 million dollars.
The concentration is deliberate. Republicans are pouring money into Texas to defend Paxton against Democrat James Talarico, who has raised heavily himself, and the Senate map has tightened in places Republicans expected to hold, including Kansas, which forecasters have moved to a toss up. Musk’s return as a mega donor reverses his stated plan last year to cut back political spending, and follows his reconciliation with President Trump after a public falling out.
Independent tracking by Politico this week found Senate Republican candidates themselves being out raised by Democrats in candidate fundraising, which makes the super PAC money, and Musk’s share of it, the load bearing wall of the party’s Senate defence. Status: figures from the quarterly FEC filing as reported October 15; final pre election filings are still to come.
