Foreign investors bought a net 300.7 billion dollars of long term US securities in August, driving a total net Treasury International Capital inflow of 199.8 billion dollars, the Treasury Department reported on Friday.

Why it matters: The rebound, after a net long term outflow in July, shows strong private foreign demand for Treasuries and equities in the same month the fiscal 2026 deficit closed near 2 trillion dollars.

Data as of US Treasury Treasury International Capital release for August 2026, published October 16, 2026, opened and read in full; all figures taken from the release itself. The next release, covering September 2026, is scheduled for November 18, 2026.

Foreign residents bought a net 300.7 billion dollars of long term US securities in August, for an estimated net long term inflow of 279.2 billion dollars after adjustments, reversing a net outflow of 27.9 billion dollars in July, and the total net Treasury International Capital inflow for the month was 199.8 billion dollars. Private foreign investors accounted for 257.8 billion dollars of the long term purchases, including 90.9 billion dollars of Treasury bonds and notes and 131.9 billion dollars of equities, while foreign official institutions bought 42.9 billion dollars, including 18.1 billion dollars of Treasury bonds and notes.

Foreign holdings of US Treasury bills fell by 47.8 billion dollars in the month, partly offsetting the long term buying.
