Valterra defers Mogalakwena underground decision to FY2027

Valterra Platinum has deferred the decision on expanding underground mining at Mogalakwena, the world's largest open pit platinum mine in South Africa's Bushveld, until its FY2027 planning round.

Why it matters: Mogalakwena is the swing asset of the platinum group metals industry; deferring its underground expansion, even as PGM prices recover, keeps the industry's biggest growth option on ice and supports the price for everyone else.

Data as of Company planning update reported October 2026 (Mining.com coverage of Valterra Platinum, formerly Anglo American Platinum). Deferral is to the FY2027 decision round.

Valterra Platinum, the PGM producer demerged from Anglo American, has pushed the decision on a major underground expansion at Mogalakwena back to its FY2027 planning round. Mogalakwena, in the northern limb of South Africa’s Bushveld complex, is the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and the core of Valterra’s production base.

An underground expansion is the mine’s long dated growth option: the orebody continues at depth, but taking it underground is a capital decision of a different order from pit pushbacks, and it competes for capital inside a group still establishing its standalone balance sheet after the demerger.

The deferral is also a market signal. Platinum group metals have recovered from their lows, but not enough, on Valterra’s evidence, to pull forward the industry’s biggest discretionary supply project. For rival producers, every year Mogalakwena’s expansion waits is a year the PGM market stays tighter than the long term demand story for autocatalysts would suggest.
