Chip selloff deepens as Broadcom leads technology lower

Technology Saturday, October 17, 2026 · Updated Oct 17, 2026 07:04

Semiconductor shares fell 4.14 percent on Friday and Broadcom dropped 4.52 percent, extending the weekly chip decline to 11.8 percent despite TSMC guidance earlier in the week.

Why it matters: The tape is now pricing AI fatigue against the strongest demand guidance of the season, a tension that will be settled by hyperscaler earnings and capex prints in the coming weeks.

Data as of Market close Friday, October 16, 2026 (Yahoo Finance data in Kilambi News market tables). Moves are the latest session and week in the tables.

Technology shares closed the week under pressure, with the semiconductor basket down 4.14 percent on the day and 11.8 percent on the week. Broadcom fell 4.52 percent, Meta dropped 3.72 percent and the technology sector index lost 3.02 percent, while the Nasdaq 100 fell 2.5 percent. Nvidia eased 1.43 percent to 214.13 dollars, taking its weekly decline to 6.61 percent.

Apple was the only megacap gainer, up 0.43 percent. Microsoft fell 1.93 percent, Alphabet 2.47 percent, Amazon 1.87 percent and Tesla 2.13 percent, a pattern that reads as broad multiple compression in the AI complex rather than a single name event. No company specific announcement in this morning’s reporting explains the sector move.

The contrast with fundamentals reported this week is sharp. TSMC on Thursday raised its full year 2026 revenue guidance to growth of close to 40 percent and guided the fourth quarter to 42.1 billion to 43.7 billion dollars. The chip selloff that paused on that guidance has resumed, which leaves the market arguing about financing and valuation, covered across this week’s editions, rather than about end demand.
