Kenya Ebola cases reach seven, health workers infected

Life Sciences Saturday, October 17, 2026 · Updated Oct 17, 2026 13:42

Kenya has confirmed four more Ebola cases, taking its total to seven, with three of the new cases health workers who treated the country's first patient, who died on October 5.

Why it matters: These are the first Ebola infections known to have been passed on inside Kenya, and health worker infections in a Bundibugyo outbreak with no approved vaccine or treatment raise the risk that a contained import becomes local transmission.

Kenya’s health ministry said on Saturday that four more people have tested positive for the Ebola Bundibugyo virus, taking the country’s confirmed total to seven, with three of the new cases health workers who treated the first patient and the fourth a relative of that patient, who died on October 5 after falling ill in the Democratic Republic of Congo and flying to Nairobi. The cases are the first known to have been passed on inside Kenya, and they are linked to the Congo outbreak, which has recorded more than 9,000 cases and more than 4,300 deaths since it was detected in May. The ministry said the relative had been in quarantine since October 6, that 128 of the first patient’s 130 contacts had been traced and quarantined, and that there is no evidence the virus is spreading in the community.
