Russia hits Zaporizhstal steelworks with six ballistic missiles

Mining Saturday, October 17, 2026 · Updated Oct 17, 2026 08:42

Russian forces struck the Zaporizhstal steelworks with six ballistic missiles on Saturday morning, the fifth attack on the plant, damaging its internal energy and logistics infrastructure and its blast furnace sites, Metinvest said.

Why it matters: Zaporizhstal is one of Ukraine’s largest steel producers and has not resumed normal production since the first strike in August, so each further attack extends the loss of capacity rather than interrupting a working plant.

Russian forces attacked the Zaporizhstal steelworks in Zaporizhzhia with six ballistic missiles on Saturday morning, the fifth strike on the plant, Metinvest said in a statement reported by NV. The missiles damaged objects of the plant’s internal energy and logistics infrastructure and its blast furnace production sites, and no workers were injured.

The plant has not resumed normal production since the first attack on August 11 stopped the production complex, and across the five attacks, on August 11 and 27 and September 12 and 17 before Saturday’s, Russian forces have fired 23 ballistic missiles at it, Metinvest said. The earlier strikes killed eight workers and wounded 31. Some processes were restarted only to keep equipment in a safe condition at a critical level. Zaporizhstal is Ukraine’s third largest producer of metal products by volume, with design capacity of 4 million tonnes of pig iron, 3.6 million tonnes of hot-rolled and 1.2 million tonnes of cold-rolled steel a year.
