An explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday left multiple people dead and others injured, with the Defence Department withholding casualty numbers while next of kin are notified.
Why it matters: Wainwright is Canada's main NATO training base and its largest live-fire army training ground, and the RCMP is investigating a fatal incident whose cause is not yet known, one day before Alberta's separation vote.

An explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta killed multiple people and injured others on Saturday, Politico reported. The fire started in the base’s training area at about 4 p.m. local time and spread quickly beyond its boundaries in winds above 60 miles per hour, and the Department of National Defence said it would not release the number of dead or injured until next of kin have been notified.
Defence Minister David McGuinty said the RCMP is investigating the cause in what he called a very active and delicate investigation, and that he could not recall an incident like this in recent memory. Chief of the Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan called it a profoundly difficult moment for the entire Canadian Armed Forces, Prime Minister Mark Carney said his thoughts were with those affected, and more detail on the cause and the damage was expected later on Sunday.
