The joint venture of Tulsa based Flintco and Minneapolis based Mortenson has begun pouring the first of more than 18 elevated concrete decks on the mezzanine and concourse levels of the Continental Coliseum in Oklahoma City, the future home of the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, Flintco announced. Work started on the southeast side of the 750,000 square foot venue, with hometown firm Dolese Bros. supplying the concrete, and crews have also begun the loading dock walls on the east side.
Two crews will work clockwise and counterclockwise around the building and meet on the opposite side, a two heading approach the joint venture says is needed to hold the schedule and begin structural steel work in 2027. Project executive Ellen Becker told Construction Dive that phased design progression and bidding has been the central challenge, as the Coliseum is the first project of this size in Oklahoma City to use that approach.
The Oklahoma City Council awarded the joint venture the construction contract in March 2025, when the venue budget was set at at least 900 million dollars. The team broke ground in March 2026 on the site of the demolished Myriad Convention Center and aims to complete the arena by summer 2028.
The 900 million dollars is a project budget, not a financing raised in this window. What is new is execution status: the vertical structure is now rising on schedule, in the same week construction input prices printed an 11.2 percent annual increase, the cost environment every remaining procurement package on this job must clear.
