Politics Sunday, October 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026 20:11

Six people, four men, one woman and an infant, were found unconscious after a speedboat carrying foreign nationals collided with a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel off Lesbos on Sunday night, and eight others had been rescued as a search and rescue operation continued.

Why it matters: Six people found unconscious, among them an infant, after a collision with the coast guard vessel on patrol in those waters puts the official account at the centre of the incident, and the first report does not yet say how the boats came together or whether the six survived.

Data as of Sunday, October 18, 2026, 20:05 ET. Developing item, single sourced, hence grade C: ERT News, in Greek and read in full, citing the Hellenic Coast Guard for the six found unconscious. The report gives no account of how the collision happened, no total for the number aboard the speedboat, and no word on whether the six survived; those points are not stated here.

A speedboat carrying foreign nationals collided with a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel in the sea area 3.5 nautical miles south of Agrielia on Lesbos, striking the left side of the coast guard vessel’s bow, ERT News reported. Six of the people aboard, four men, one woman and an infant, were found unconscious, according to the Coast Guard, and eight others, four men, two women and two children, had been rescued.

A search and rescue operation coordinated by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Centre was still under way, with a floating ambulance, a coast guard vessel, three patrol boats and a Hellenic Air Force helicopter taking part and a private vessel of the Hellenic Rescue Team heading to the area. The report did not say how the collision happened, how many people were aboard in total, or what condition the six found unconscious were in beyond that description.
