Amsons Group has agreed to acquire Oryx Energies’ downstream oil business in Tanzania in a transaction valued at more than 230 million dollars, the companies said. The purchase covers Oryx’s retail service stations, bulk storage terminals and distribution infrastructure in Tanzania, including equity interests in storage operations at the Tanzania International Petroleum Reserves (TIPER) facility in Dar es Salaam, and takes Amsons’ fuel storage capacity from 300,000 metric tonnes to 800,000 metric tonnes and its retail network to roughly 300 service stations across several countries.
Amsons managing director Edha Nahdi called the acquisition a transformative step that strengthens domestic fuel security and anchors Tanzania as a regional logistics hub for East and Central Africa. Oryx chief executive Moussa Diao said Tanzania had been an important part of the company’s history, and that the sale fits Oryx’s strategy of focusing capital on developing energy infrastructure across Africa and strengthening its trading activities. Oryx will keep operating the Tanzanian business as usual until completion, which remains subject to regulatory approvals.
The fuel deal extends a run of Amsons acquisitions in the region: it has bought Mbeya Cement in Tanzania, launched buyout offers for Bamburi Cement and East African Portland Cement in Kenya, and announced a 1,000 megawatt solar investment in Zambia.
