China aluminium output hits record quarterly high

China's primary aluminium production reached a record 11.84 million tonnes in the third quarter, up 2.2 percent year on year, with September output of 3.91 million tonnes, official data showed on Monday.

Why it matters: Output is running at an annualised pace near 46.7 million tonnes against a 45 million tonne capacity cap set in 2017, which means global aluminium supply now responds to Chinese smelter margins more than to the headline ceiling.

Data as of National Bureau of Statistics data for July to September 2026, published Monday October 19, 2026. Annualised pace is a Reuters calculation from the official data. The capacity cap applies to installed capacity, not to output tonnage.

China’s primary aluminium production hit a record quarterly high in the three months to September, official data showed on Monday, as smelters kept operating rates high despite the government capacity ceiling in place since 2017. Third quarter output was 11.84 million tonnes, up 2.2 percent from a year earlier, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, with September production of 3.91 million tonnes. Reuters calculated from the data that output is tracking at an annualised pace of about 46.7 million tonnes.

That pace sits above the 45 million tonne figure usually cited as China’s cap. The distinction matters: the policy limits installed smelting capacity, the equipment in place, rather than the tonnage produced in any period. Smelters can therefore raise output by improving efficiency and running existing plants harder when margins allow. Reuters reported that stronger prices after Middle East related supply disruptions, together with relatively low raw material costs, supported smelter margins through the quarter and encouraged producers to maximise runs.

China produces well over half of the world’s primary aluminium, so its operating decisions set the global balance. A record quarter at near full utilisation means there is little spare Chinese capacity left to answer a further price spike, but it also means supply can fall back quickly if margins narrow, because the same utilisation lever works in both directions. For smelters outside China, the read is that the ceiling on Chinese output is real but soft: it is set by economics at the margin, not by the 2017 number alone.
