GreenSquare opens Sydney campus hosting 8,200 Nvidia GPUs

GreenSquare has opened the first phase of its SYD1 campus in western Sydney, a reused 1995 IBM data center now hosting about 8,200 Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs for Australian AI cloud firm Sharon AI, with an 80 megawatt expansion planned.

Why it matters: The project shows the reuse route into AI capacity, increasing IT capacity within the original building footprint by 275 percent in eight months, at a site set to grow from its current size to 110 megawatts.

Australian data center firm GreenSquare has launched the first phase of its SYD1 campus in Norwest Business Park, western Sydney. The site at 3 Brookhollow Avenue is a reuse of an IBM data center originally opened in 1995, delivered in eight months and updated to support high density AI workloads and direct to chip liquid cooling. Main construction works began in February 2026.

The facility is serving Australian AI cloud firm Sharon AI, which is deploying approximately 8,200 Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs at the site. GreenSquare kept the existing slab and moved the data halls to the ground floor to accommodate higher density compute without additional structural reinforcement, which it said increased IT capacity within the original building footprint by 275 percent. It replaced the original cooling towers with a closed loop system that operates without evaporative cooling for approximately 96 percent of the year, and rainwater harvesting is expected to offset approximately 10 percent of annual cooling water requirements.

“We saw an opportunity to give a 30 year old data center a completely new purpose,” GreenSquare chief technology officer Joshua Martens said.

GreenSquare, launched in October 2022 and acquired by Swiss private equity firm Partners Group in March 2025, plans an 80 megawatt expansion that would take the site to 110 megawatts. Sharon AI, which is Nasdaq listed and also uses Equinix in Sydney and NextDC in Melbourne, says it has 212 megawatts of capacity online or in development and some 64,000 Nvidia GPUs due to be deployed by mid 2027.
