OpenAI is racing to secure investor commitments before Anthropic’s expected public market debut in mid-November, in an unusually fast fundraising of about 30 billion dollars that could value the ChatGPT maker at more than 1.4 trillion dollars, Reuters reported, citing two people familiar with the matter. SoftBank Group, Abu Dhabi based MGX and other existing backers are in talks to join the round, one of the people said. OpenAI was last valued at 852 billion dollars in March, after a 122 billion dollar round that included an Amazon commitment of up to 50 billion dollars.
OpenAI is pitching growth that accelerated after the launch of its GPT-6 Astra model, telling investors annualized revenue has reached 50 billion dollars and should rise to 70 billion dollars by year end, according to one of the people. It wants to finish before Anthropic’s IPO disclosures invite direct comparisons: Anthropic told investors its annualized revenue reached roughly 65 billion dollars by July, and the two labs dispute how revenue should be counted, OpenAI recording it net of partner shares and accusing Anthropic of counting gross contract values, a practice Anthropic says follows established accounting. Investors familiar with OpenAI say it also needs the capital for its infrastructure commitments and to strengthen its balance sheet if weak IPO markets push its planned 2027 listing back further.
