Replit, the AI coding platform favoured by startup founders and developers, is no longer working with Anthropic as its partner, chief executive and co-founder Amjad Masad said on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt. Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August, but there had been no indication until now that Anthropic had lost its position.
“I think ChatGPT is better now,” Masad said, adding that the company uses an internal benchmark and publishes a public one, and that OpenAI’s models consistently perform better on building vibe coded applications from scratch. “It was a decision based on both cost, partnership, and performance. And for all these reasons, we just felt like they were a better partner for now.”
After the event, Masad clarified that customers can still access Anthropic models on the platform, but OpenAI’s ChatGPT is now the default, and told TechCrunch that Replit remains model agnostic, with OpenAI now its preferred partner for powering Replit Agent based on performance, economics and the strength of the partnership. The distinction matters commercially: most customers stick with the default rather than selecting a model themselves, so a default switch can significantly reduce Replit’s spend with Anthropic. Before the OpenAI deal, Replit relied on Anthropic’s Claude models and was said to have been, until recently, a top five customer of Anthropic’s.
The claim is contested. A person familiar with the partnership between Anthropic and Replit, who asked not to be named, said the partnership was still in place, and Replit was promoting Anthropic products as recently as a few weeks ago. Masad also said enterprise is a growing share of revenue, at about 15 percent this year against 2 percent last year, with more than 50 percent of revenue now business to business, and that he expects more than half of revenue to come from enterprise and government customers in 2027.
