Saudi Arabia postpones flagship investment conference to 2027

Saudi Arabia has postponed the Future Investment Initiative conference, its flagship gathering for global investors scheduled for October 26 to 29 in Riyadh, to 2027, as the kingdom comes under repeated Houthi attacks.

Why it matters: The conference, often called Davos in the Desert, is the centrepiece of the kingdom's pitch for foreign capital, and postponing its tenth edition underlines how the Houthi campaign against Saudi airports is now disrupting the economic programme itself.

Data as of AFP report of October 19, 2026, read in full via Vanguard, including the FII Institute statement posted on X; corroborated by The Hill on October 19, 2026, which adds that a pair of attacks on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport killed at least 13 people and injured at least 320, per Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation. The Future Investment Initiative, Saudi Arabia’s annual showcase for global investors, business leaders and heads of state, will not take place as scheduled from October 26 to 29, its organisers said on Monday. In a statement posted on X, FII Institute chief executive Maha Al Saud said the tenth edition would instead be held in 2027 so that it could deliver the full scale and quality participants expect, that new dates would be announced soon, and that existing registrations and partnerships would remain valid. Three sources briefed on the matter had earlier told AFP the conference would be postponed.

The decision follows repeated attacks on the kingdom by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis. Riyadh’s international airport suspended operations earlier this month after an October 10 strike killed 13 people, with no clear timeline for resuming traffic, and a consultant who advises Saudi firms told AFP that executives were hesitant to travel to Riyadh and that companies would not put employees in harm’s way for an investment conference.
