Torrential rain in eastern Spain has killed at least four people in recent days, with up to 700 litres of rain per square metre falling in 24 hours in parts of the Valencian Community and more than 400 rescues carried out in the region.
Why it matters: The flooding is the second deadly Mediterranean storm episode to hit Spain's east coast in two days, in a region still marked by the catastrophic floods of nearly two years ago, and authorities confined about 100 municipalities for hours on Monday.

At least four people have died in recent days after torrential rain flooded eastern Spain, authorities said on Monday. In the Valencian Community, where up to 700 litres of rain per square metre fell in 24 hours in some areas, the regional president, Juan Francisco Pérez Llorca, said three people had died: a swimmer at a beach in Sagunto on Sunday, and two people found on Monday morning in the coastal town of Oliva, a 79-year-old woman found at her home and a man who suffered a heart attack at a campsite. The fourth victim was the woman who fell into a swollen stream in Catalonia on Saturday.
Security forces carried out more than 400 rescues in the Valencian Community, by air and by land, the central government’s delegate in the region, Pilar Bernabé, said, and about 15 helicopters were still working on Monday around towns including Gandía. The rain, which also hit the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, led authorities to order residents in about 100 municipalities to stay indoors for several hours; most of the orders were lifted early on Monday afternoon, and the army’s emergency unit joined the rescue and evacuation work.
