Anthropic is in talks to lease a second 460 megawatts at Nscale's Monarch campus in West Virginia under a contract that could be worth up to 45 billion dollars, Bloomberg reported, on top of a first 460 megawatt agreement the two signed in August.
Why it matters: A second contract of that size would double Anthropic's committed capacity at Monarch and keep the neocloud buildout, and the power and chip orders behind it, expanding at a pace set by lease talks rather than by finished data centres.
Data as of Datacenter Dynamics report of October 20, 2026, read in full, reporting Bloomberg's account from a person familiar with the matter; CNBC reported the talks the same day citing its own source. Neither Anthropic nor Nscale has confirmed the talks, and the 45 billion dollar figure is a reported ceiling, not a signed contract value. Developing item.
Anthropic is in talks to take space in a second data centre building at Nscale’s Monarch campus in West Virginia, Bloomberg reported, in a contract that could be valued at up to 45 billion dollars for 460 megawatts of capacity running Nvidia Vera Rubin chips, with Anthropic holding a right of first refusal on a third building. The two companies signed a first agreement in August, also for 460 megawatts at Monarch, a 2,250 acre site where Nscale plans up to 8 gigawatts and where Microsoft has also committed to 1.35 gigawatts.
Neither company has confirmed the talks: Anthropic declined to comment to CNBC, and Nscale had not commented in the reports. The report lands days after Microsoft pulled out of a separate Nscale capacity deal in the United Kingdom over grid connection delays, a contrast between the American campus, powered by on-site gas generation, and British projects waiting on the grid queue.
