ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have ordered more than 3 million of Nvidia’s new RTX PRO 5500 cards for AI inference work, at a collective sticker price above $35 billion, Reuters reported, citing two people familiar with the matter. Nvidia has told customers and partners it cannot guarantee the orders can be filled: one source said partners might receive only 5 to 10 percent of what they requested, and another said Nvidia indicated it could produce no more than 3 million of the cards worldwide in 2027, against orders from Chinese customers alone above 6 million. Early samples are expected in December, with commercial deliveries beginning in the first quarter of 2027.
ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent order $35 billion in Nvidia chips
ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have together ordered more than 3 million of Nvidia’s RTX PRO 5500 workstation cards, a collective sticker price of more than $35 billion at about $11,400 per card, Reuters reported on Tuesday.
Why it matters: Nvidia has told customers it cannot guarantee it can fill the orders, which shows how far Chinese demand for the most powerful export-compliant Nvidia chip still available to Chinese buyers exceeds the supply Nvidia plans to make.
