Japan's Ministry of Finance sold 20-year bonds on Tuesday drawing 3,139.0 billion yen of competitive bids against 537.1 billion yen accepted, a bid-to-cover ratio of 5.84 that Bloomberg reported as the strongest demand on record for the tenor.

Why it matters: Buyers competed for 20-year paper at a 3.723 percent average yield nine days before the Bank of Japan's October 29 to 30 meeting, a sign the long end can clear large supply at current levels after months of weak auction readings.

Bloomberg reported the bidding as the strongest demand on record for a 20-year sale, a sharp turn from the soft 20-year readings earlier this year, and the result lands ahead of the ministry’s October 27 liquidity enhancement auction and the Bank of Japan’s October 29 to 30 policy meeting.
