STAT has published a long profile of Isomorphic Labs, the Alphabet drug discovery unit built on DeepMind’s protein structure work, asking whether it has what it takes to revolutionise drugmaking. It is a profile, not an event: no financing, partnership or clinical milestone was announced. It belongs in this roundup because Isomorphic’s progress, or lack of it, is the reference case every AI drug discovery valuation is priced against, and a sceptical trade press examination of the sector’s flagship is worth registering on the record.
STAT’s investigation desk reported that the nonprofit arbitrators who resolve billing disputes under the No Surprises Act are operating with little oversight and profiting substantially from the role, describing them as acting like “mini gods” over surprise medical bill cases. The arbitration system was designed to take patients out of insurer provider payment fights; evidence that the referees themselves have become a profit centre is the kind of finding that draws congressional attention, and it lands two weeks before a midterm election in which health costs are a live issue.
PacBio and Verily Health announced a multi year collaboration at the ASHG meeting to combine PacBio’s HiFi long read sequencing with Verily’s Pre data platform and Workbench research environment, building clinico-genomic datasets for research and for training AI models. Long reads capture structural variants, methylation patterns and full length transcripts that short reads miss; the bottleneck the deal addresses is joining those genomes to governed clinical records at scale. No financial terms, customers or deployment timetable were disclosed.
UK Biobank and London based IMU Biosciences launched an immune profiling initiative that will generate more than 100 million immune data points per sample from an initial 80,000 participant blood samples, with an ambition to extend across the full 500,000 participant cohort. The project uses IMU’s HD Immunology platform with Waters supplied BD flow cytometry and single cell multiomics instruments, and Ultima Genomics’ UG200 sequencing platform for readouts. The resulting immune layer will sit on top of UK Biobank’s existing genomic, imaging, clinical and lifestyle data and be returned to approved researchers, which is what makes it infrastructure rather than a single study.
Two calendar markers close the roundup. STAT published its guide to the health care ballot measures it is watching in the November midterms, a map of where state level votes will set health policy facts for 2027 that sits alongside this site’s coverage of California’s Proposition 38 immunology bond. And Endpoints News previewed the regular abstract program for ESMO 2026 in Madrid, October 23 to 27, featuring Zai Lab, GSK and Merck among others; the abstracts are the week’s data calendar, not results, and this site will cover the readouts as they are presented.
