OpenAI buys Orchestra Bio in drug development push

Life Sciences Tuesday, October 20, 2026 - Updated Oct 20, 2026 14:46

OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a startup whose platform lets researchers hand drug development tasks such as monitoring studies, tracking timelines and spotting delays to AI agents, and will fold its team and technology into Rosalind, its life sciences suite.

Why it matters: The deal moves OpenAI from selling models for biology into owning the workflow layer that manages drug programs, in direct competition with Anthropic's expanding life sciences business.

OpenAI has bought Orchestra Bio, a startup that built AI agents for drug development, Axios reported on Tuesday in an exclusive later reported by other outlets. Orchestra’s team and technology will join Rosalind, OpenAI’s suite of models and tools for biology and drug discovery, and OpenAI said the platform was designed to let researchers hand off tasks such as monitoring studies, tracking development timelines and spotting possible delays to AI agents.

The acquisition deepens OpenAI’s push into life sciences, where it introduced GPT-Rosalind in April and has partnerships with drugmakers including Novo Nordisk and Moderna, and it puts the company in closer competition with Anthropic, which bought Coefficient Bio earlier this year. OpenAI did not disclose financial terms.
