Britain sends RAF Typhoons to defend Saudi airspace

Politics Tuesday, October 20, 2026 - Updated Oct 20, 2026 07:32

Britain will fly defensive counter-air missions over Saudi Arabia with RAF Typhoon fighter jets to protect Saudi cities and critical national infrastructure against aerial attack, the Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday.

Why it matters: The deployment deepens Britain's direct role in Saudi air defence as Houthi attacks on Saudi targets escalate, tying UK forces more closely to the Gulf air war and the energy security risks that come with it.

Data as of UK Ministry of Defence press release published October 20, 2026 on GOV.UK and read in full; the deployment was also reported by the BBC and the Guardian the same morning. Developing item.

The Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday that RAF Typhoon fighter jets will fly defensive counter-air missions to protect Saudi cities and critical national infrastructure against aerial attack, in additional support given escalating Houthi attacks in the region. The aircraft will operate in a defensive role and will not conduct offensive strikes against the Houthis, and Britain will also provide an RAF A400M to move defence materiel within Saudi Arabia, military advisers to support Saudi staff officers, and an extension of air-to-air refuelling support for Saudi defensive air operations. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said he had approved the further support after Houthi attacks that included the targeting of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, building on the air defence equipment and personnel Britain already has in the country.
