Volvo Group is creating a dedicated mining business. Volvo Mining will bring together the group’s capabilities for mining customers under a single integrated structure, selling Volvo trucks, construction equipment and autonomous solutions to miners and their contractors. The entity launches on January 1, 2027, will be hosted within Volvo Construction Equipment, and will be led by Per-Erik Lindström, currently senior vice president of Volvo Trucks International. It will initially focus on customers and contractors in Sweden, Norway and Finland, with phased expansion into additional markets planned.
The unit will have dedicated financial resources, will manage the group’s mining product and service portfolio globally, and will coordinate mining research projects across the group. “Mining has been an important part of the Volvo Group for decades, but the industry’s growing significance calls for an even greater level of focus,” Volvo CE president Melker Jernberg said. Volvo Trucks president Roger Alm added that mining customers make long term investments and value partners that combine performance and operational expertise across excavation, hauling, loading and transport.
Autonomy is central to the pitch. Nils Jaeger, president of Volvo Autonomous Solutions, said combining proven autonomous technology with the wider group’s portfolio and customer relationships would let Volvo offer integrated solutions that improve safety, productivity and efficiency. Mines are under pressure on all three, and increasingly buy outcomes across a fleet rather than machines one at a time.
The reorganisation is organisational, not a product launch, and its value will be measured in orders. It does signal where equipment competition is heading: the largest suppliers are building single mining facing units that can bundle trucks, loaders, haulers, autonomy and services into one contract, which raises the bar for mid sized equipment makers that sell into the same pits without that breadth.
