German investor expectations fall more than forecast in October

Rates Tuesday, October 20, 2026 - Updated Oct 20, 2026 05:49

The ZEW indicator of economic sentiment for Germany fell to 28.1 points in October from 34.7 in September, a larger drop than analysts expected, while the assessment of current conditions improved sharply to minus 35.9, its highest since May 2023.

Why it matters: The split reading, weaker expectations against a better present, matches ZEW president Achim Wambach’s comment that Germany is moving slowly out of stagnation but the recovery is not self-sustaining, with high energy prices weighing on consumption and investment.

Data as of ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment, October 2026, released Tuesday, October 20, 2026 in Mannheim, as reported by Interfax, in Russian, and by Osna.FM, both read in full and agreeing on all index values. Analyst expectations cited are Trading Economics consensus as reported by Interfax: 30 points for Germany and 23.6 for the eurozone. Developing item.

Germany’s ZEW expectations index fell 6.6 points to 28.1 in October, below the 30 points analysts had expected, while the current conditions index rose 11.2 points to minus 35.9, the strongest reading since May 2023. Eurozone expectations fell 7.3 points to 18.5, also below the 23.6 expected, with the bloc’s current conditions little changed at minus 14.8. ZEW president Achim Wambach said the German economy is slowly moving out of stagnation but the recovery is not self-perpetuating, as high energy prices press on real incomes, raise production costs and keep inflation higher for longer.
