India's Index of Core Industries grew 7.9 percent year on year in September 2026, the provisional release showed, up from a final 5.9 percent in August.
Why it matters: Core industries carry roughly two-fifths of India's industrial production index, and the September acceleration, led by iron ore, electricity and coal, points to firm industrial momentum heading into the RBI's next decision.
Data as of PIB release PRID 2326089 (in Hindi; figures verified against the English version, PRID 2326038), posted Oct 21, 2026.
India’s Index of Core Industries grew 7.9 percent year on year in September 2026 on a provisional basis, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said, with the overall index at 118.3 against 109.6 a year earlier. Iron ore output rose 18.4 percent, electricity 11.4 percent, coal 10.7 percent, refinery products 10.3 percent, cement 9.8 percent and steel 4.9 percent, while fertilizers fell 11.7 percent, natural gas 4.6 percent and crude oil 1.4 percent.
August’s final reading was revised up to 5.9 percent growth from the 4.8 percent provisional print, with the index revised to 120.4 from 119.2. Cumulative core output growth for April to September 2026 was 5.1 percent, against 2.5 percent in the same period a year earlier.
