FDA accepts Biohaven Vyglxia resubmission for fresh review

The FDA has accepted Biohaven's resubmitted application for Vyglxia in spinocerebellar ataxia and will convene an advisory panel, with a decision expected in the first quarter of next year.

Why it matters: Vyglxia was rejected last November and could be the first marketed treatment for spinocerebellar ataxia, so the fresh review reopens a program analysts have valued at more than $1 billion in annual sales.

The Food and Drug Administration has accepted Biohaven’s resubmitted application for Vyglxia, its treatment for spinocerebellar ataxia, and will convene an advisory panel of outside experts before deciding, BioPharma Dive reported on Thursday, citing the company’s regulatory filing. Biohaven expects a decision in the first quarter of next year, and its shares rose about 25 percent on the disclosure.

The acceptance reopens a program the FDA formally rejected last November, after finding the company’s key trial unconvincing, and that Biohaven had also withdrawn in Europe. The resubmission carries what the company called new positive supportive analyses, and analysts at TD Cowen and RBC Capital Markets said the panel scheduling and the agency’s recent flexibility on rare disease medicines improve the drug’s chances, though approval is not assured.
