Ecuadorean opposition leader Luisa Gonzalez was arrested on Thursday as part of an investigation into alleged irregularities in the financing of her 2023 presidential campaign, in a case prosecutors say involves about $500,000 in campaign advertising funds.

Why it matters: Gonzalez is the leading figure of the Citizen Revolution Movement and lost run-off elections to President Daniel Noboa in 2023 and 2025, and her party, which calls the arrest political persecution, was already suspended from the local elections scheduled for November 29.

Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office said it executed arrest warrants against three people suspected of money laundering, as part of an investigation into seven people over inconsistencies in contributions and the lawful source of funds during the 2023 presidential campaign. Investigators are examining the use of a network of entities to channel approximately $500,000 for campaign advertising between May and August 2023, and allege the money may have been transferred without disclosing its sources or the identities of contributors.

Gonzalez, an ally of former President Rafael Correa who has denied wrongdoing in earlier financing probes, called the accusations absurd and compared her situation to that of a political prisoner. The Citizen Revolution Movement’s president, Gabriela Rivadeneira, denounced the arrest as political persecution and demanded her immediate release, and Correa also rejected the allegations.
