OpenAI is close to finalizing a funding round of up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, a figure that excludes the new capital being raised, CNBC reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the deal who asked not to be named because the details are confidential. Investors from the United Arab Emirates and Coatue are leading the financing, which is being positioned as a bridge ahead of a potential initial public offering, and OpenAI told investors it aims to secure signatures by the end of next week. Discussions began after investors approached the company with proposals in September, and alongside the investment OpenAI is negotiating a commercial deal to secure more computing capacity from the UAE.
OpenAI confidentially filed its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June without disclosing a debut date, and the report notes internal tension over timing: Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar told employees in August that the company will be public in 2027, while Chief Executive Sam Altman said in September that going public then would be ill-advised. The company told investors in February that it is targeting roughly $600 billion in total compute spending by 2030.
Correction: an earlier version of this item named specific Emirati investors, a regulatory filing, and other participants that the CNBC report does not mention. Those details have been removed.
