Taiwan will suspend trading on its stock exchange on Friday as Typhoon Champi approaches, the Taiwan Stock Exchange said, with settlements scheduled for Friday postponed to the next business day and offices and schools shut in Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung. As of 6 p.m. local time on Thursday, 126 domestic flights and 40 international and cross-strait flights had been cancelled, according to Taiwan’s Civil Aviation Administration. Champi was 713 kilometres southwest of Okinawa with top sustained winds of 213 kilometres per hour, equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane, and is forecast to pass closest to northern Taiwan late Friday into Saturday, with extreme rain over greater Taipei that could bring flash floods and landslides.
Taiwan suspends stock trading Friday as Typhoon Champi nears
Taiwan will suspend trading on its stock exchange on Friday and postpone Friday settlements to the next business day as Typhoon Champi approaches, with offices and schools shut in Taipei and other major cities.
Why it matters: A full day closure of Taiwan's stock market, in the island that anchors global chip supply, is a direct disruption signal for Asian trading on Friday, and the storm is forecast to bring extreme rain to northern Taiwan late Friday into Saturday.
