Coalition says drone downed over Saudi Eastern Province

Politics Friday, October 23, 2026 - Updated Oct 23, 2026 21:50

Coalition forces backing Yemen's government said they intercepted and destroyed a drone in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, as Saudi Civil Defense issued aerial-threat alarms early on Saturday for Riyadh, Najran and Wadi Al-Dawasir amid a surge in Houthi cross-border attacks.

Why it matters: Cross-border drone and missile fire on Saudi Arabia has risen sharply since the four-year truce in Yemen broke down in July, and the latest alerts reached the capital as well as the southern border region.

Data as of October 23, 2026, 21:50 ET: Arab News report of October 23, 2026, with AFP, read in full; the interception rests on coalition spokesman Brig. Gen. Turki Al-Malki's statement on X and the alarms on Saudi Civil Defense's Early Warning Platform, and no Houthi statement or independent corroboration had appeared in the report. The article reported no casualties from this incident. Developing item.

Coalition spokesman Brig. Gen. Turki Al-Malki said in a statement on X that a drone was intercepted and destroyed in the Eastern Province. Shortly past 4 a.m. local time, Saudi Civil Defense sounded alarms warning of potential incoming aerial threats across Riyadh, Najran and the southern governorate of Wadi Al-Dawasir, and two loud blasts were heard across the capital minutes after the alert, Arab News reported.

Saudi Arabia has faced sustained drone and missile barrages in recent weeks, including a strike on Riyadh’s international airport, and cross-border attacks have surged since the breakdown in July of an uneasy four-year truce in Yemen, the report said.
