Sevastopol was temporarily left without electricity on Friday after what its Russian-installed governor called a Ukrainian attack on energy infrastructure outside the city, with social facilities switched to reserve power schemes and residents urged to save phone charge.
Why it matters: A city-wide blackout in the home port of Russia's Black Sea Fleet would mark another Ukrainian strike on the energy systems sustaining the occupation of Crimea, though the governor's account had no Ukrainian or independent confirmation when it was reported.

Sevastopol was temporarily left without electricity on Friday as a result of a Ukrainian attack on energy infrastructure outside the city, its Russian-installed governor, Mikhail Razvozhaev, said in a statement carried by TASS, RIA Novosti and Lenta.ru. A special regime was introduced at facilities in the city, social facilities switched to reserve power-supply schemes, and specialists were working to restore electricity to homes, he said, advising residents to save phone charge, use gadgets only for emergency communication and turn screen brightness to the minimum.
None of the reports gave a restoration timetable, and no individual facilities were named. Ukraine had not confirmed any attack on Sevastopol’s power system, and the governor’s account had not been independently corroborated.
