Indonesia cuts piped gas exports to Singapore from today

Commodities Saturday, October 24, 2026 - Updated Oct 24, 2026 06:45

Indonesia is cutting natural gas exports to Singapore by 31 billion British thermal units per day from Saturday, and Gas Supply, one of the city state's largest suppliers, said its deliveries to customers have been hit by temporary reductions.

Why it matters: Natural gas fuels about 95 percent of Singapore's electricity generation, so even a cut an analyst put at about 2.25 percent of gas usage tests the city state's reliance on two Indonesian pipelines and its ability to replace the volumes at short notice.

Data as of The Straits Times report of October 24, 2026, read in full, reporting a statement by Gas Supply and, via Indonesian media, October 23 comments by Djoko Siswanto, chief of Indonesia's upstream regulator SKK Migas. Single-publisher report: Sembcorp and Singapore's energy ministry had not commented in the article, and no duration for the reductions was given. Developing item.

Indonesia is cutting its natural gas exports to Singapore by 31 billion British thermal units per day from Saturday, split between 15 from Natuna and 16 from the Jambi Merang field in Sumatra, according to comments by SKK Migas chief Djoko Siswanto on October 23 carried in Indonesian media and reported by The Straits Times. Gas Supply, a Temasek-owned company and one of Singapore’s largest gas suppliers, said its delivery of gas to customers has been affected by temporary reductions from its Indonesian supplier and that it is in direct communication with affected customers.

The cuts were framed in Indonesian media as part of the Prabowo government’s move to prioritize domestic energy needs. David Broadstock of the Lantau Group estimated the reduction at about 2.25 percent of Singapore’s gas usage and said he did not expect massive market disruptions, though replacement cargoes, potentially from the United States or the Middle East, would presumably cost more.
