KT breaks ground on 50MW Ansan AI data center

Technology Sunday, October 25, 2026 - Updated Oct 25, 2026 07:09

KT Cloud has broken ground on a 50MW AI data center in Ansan, due in 2029, within a plan for up to 1GW of AI capacity by 2031.

Why it matters: South Korea's incumbent carrier is building AI capacity on the same multi year timeline as the US hyperscalers, and the 2029 delivery date calibrates how far announced capacity sits from operation.

KT Cloud has broken ground on a 50MW AI data center in Ansan, in Gyeonggi Province near Seoul, Datacenter Dynamics reported. The facility totals 36,880 square metres across nine stories with two basement floors and is due live in 2029. KT Cloud chief executive Kim Bong-kyun said the design incorporates power and cooling infrastructure optimised for high density AI servers.

The Ansan project sits inside a larger build programme. KT plans to offer up to 1GW of AI data center capacity by 2031. A further 50MW facility in Cheongna, Incheon, is set to start construction in the fourth quarter of this year for completion in the first quarter of 2030, and construction has begun in Gunsan with SGC Energy on a site offering 60MW initially, live in the first quarter of 2028, with potential to scale to 300MW. Its 40MW Gasan facility, with liquid cooling and 26MW of IT capacity, opened in November 2025.
