Maria Corina Machado returns to Venezuela after ten months abroad

Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado announced on Sunday that she is back in Venezuela, ending almost ten months abroad, and former presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez confirmed her return.

Why it matters: Machado's presence inside the country is a direct challenge both to the Chavista government, which calls her its leading enemy, and to a Washington backed transition track that has been taking shape without her, and she returns intending to lead the opposition into any electoral opening.

Data as of El Pais report of October 25, 2026, in Spanish and read in full in this run, is the source for the return announcement, the Gonzalez confirmation, the seven earlier blocked or cancelled return attempts and the December 2025 departure to collect the Nobel Peace Prize. AFP reporting via UOL, in Portuguese, corroborates the announcement. The route of entry, reported by Newsmax as via Colombia with a public appearance planned on Sunday, is carried as that outlet's reporting in the El Pais account and has not been independently confirmed here.
