Telefonica and IQM Quantum Computers will deploy the Community of Madrid’s first quantum computer at the Polytechnic University of Madrid by the end of 2026, the companies announced this week. The system is the IQM Spark, an integrated machine designed for research, training and early stage application development, and it will give universities, hospitals, research centres and startups in the region direct access to quantum hardware.
The Madrid installation complements two quantum computers at the Galicia Supercomputing Center under the same Telefonica and IQM collaboration. Telefonica Espana chairman Borja Ochoa linked the project to the company’s quantum work in networks and in encryption for sensitive sectors such as healthcare and security. IQM, founded in Helsinki in 2018, operates quantum data centers in Finland and Munich, has delivered systems to supercomputing centres in South Korea, Brazil, Poland, Italy and Taiwan, and listed on Nasdaq over the summer through a SPAC merger with Real Asset Acquisition Corp.
